Cape Clear Island lies eight miles off the coast of West Cork in Ireland. The Republic's most southerly inhabited area, with a population of approx. 100, the island is best known for its wildlife and unspoilt rustic charm.

A further four miles southwest of the island lies Fastnet Rock with its striking, stand out feature, namely the Fastnet Rock Lighthouse. The terrain is about as rugged as it gets, its Irish name being An Charraig Aonair, meaning “The Rock that Stands Alone.”

1st Fastnet Lighthouse

An earlier lighthouse had been built on Cape Clear Island as far back as 1818, but due to a shipping disaster in 1847, when an American sailing packet was wrecked on rocks nearby in thick fog, a decision was made to replace it with a new lighthouse actually on Fastnet Rock, as opposed to the island.
