www.police.uk was launched on Tuesday 1 February 2011 surrounded by great media attention and much public interest. The government-backed website aims to provide members of the public with information regarding levels of crime in their local area. The website includes details of local police stations and information regarding the officers who make up your local Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT).

The area of the site that caught most peoples' attention however was the crime maps.

Get the low-down on crime with your local map

Enter your postcode of the name of your town and in an instant you can receive a 'crime map' the map supposedly gives the total overall number of crimes reported for that area. These crimes are grouped into various sub-headings including, violent crime, vehicle crime, burglary, robbery, anti-social behaviour and 'other crimes'. This other crimes section appears to contain the figures for crimes not fitting into one of the other categories, everything from shoplifting through criminal damage to drug related offences.

The maps allow the user to see how many crimes were reported for an individual street during a particular month. The website is currently giving figures and information for crimes committed during the month of December 2010.
