History

The land itself is composed of mostly older Pleistocene Age geology with small sections of younger land from the Holocene Period. The coastal Guale Native American tribe lived on the island during the 16th century and some representatives of the Muskogian tribes also lived there. They were hunter-gatherers, who found a variety of fish in the creeks and grew a few crops of beans, corn and squash on the island.
