Dark clouds loomed, which was a worry. I’d promised sun, sea and sand on our visit to Great Barrier Island, but thoughts of sodden socks and ponchos were blowing in from the west.
You see, she was after a few days of sitting on a beach with the company of a good book, while I was looking for adventure in the rugged wilderness. Somehow we’d managed to agree Great Barrier Island, off the coast of Auckland in New Zealand, was the place where we could both find what we were looking for.
Arriving at Great Barrier Island
By even coming here we’d done more than most Aucklanders and visitors to New Zealand, our friendly bus driver, Claire, told us. She moved to the Island, turning away from city life, six years ago. “Any regrets?”, “No!” she laughed as she weaved around the curly roads leading out from Tryphena, the main port in the south of the island.
