Some of the most beautiful expressions of art, literature and music come from Norway. Certainly the folklore of Norway dates to the earliest of written history. The deep forests, sky-reaching mountains, and rocky fiords of Norway have been a source of inspiration for many in the Land of the Midnight Sun.

J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series is deeply entrenched in Norse and other Scandinavian legends, myths, and sagas. Travel to Norway should definitely include a concert to hear the music of Edvard Grieg and the country's delightful folk music.

The Fiords of Norway Inspired Edvard Grieg, Her Most Famous Classical Composer

The most notable of Norwegian composers was Edvard Grieg. He succinctly captured the geography, the people, and the attitudes toward life in his breathtaking homeland. With compositions like Peer Gynt, listeners are greeted by songbirds, as played on the flute, in "Morning Mood" (Morgenstimmung). Equally famous is "In the Hall of the Mountain King," immortalized by Walt Disney in the movie, Fantasia. "God's Son Had Made Me Free" is a beautiful men's choir anthem, also written by Edvard Grieg. It has elements of both chorales and counterpoint in the opening phrases. The Luther College Norsemen have a beautiful performance of this piece available on Youtube.
