Genealogists looking for old newspaper obituaries from South Carolina have a number of good sources available to them. Many public libraries have online indexes that can be consulted from home or at the library; copies of the actual obits can then be ordered. Other libraries or historical societies have created indexes that are available only on the premises.
The following libraries have online indexes, and can be located with a simple Google search. Look for websites for:
- Beaufort County Library
- Charleston County Public Library
- Colleton County Memorial Library
- Dillon County Library
- Florence County Library
- Greenville County Library System
- Greenwood County Library
- Kershaw County Archives and Museum
- Richland County Public Library
- Spartanburg County Public Library
Methodist Obituaries
Another online source for obituaries is the one hosted by Wofford College, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, which is home to a valuable, though little-known resource for genealogists: the South Carolina United Methodist Collection. Included in the Methodist Archives is an index to obituaries that appeared in the conference newspaper, the Southern Christian Advocate, since it began in 1837, and in its successor, the South Carolina United Methodist Advocate. When the researcher has located the information, he may contact the archivist to obtain a copy of the obituary.
